Animation 'Project Vlaardingen' [2024]

April 2024, I started an animation project that quickly became more than just a school assignment. A series of bombings in my street in Vlaardingen (near Rotterdam, NL) had taken place in the past months, and it completely consumed my thoughts. I couldn’t focus on anything else, so I decided to turn that experience into the subject of my project.
I used gelliprint to show the first explosion in a truck, capturing the chaos and suddenness of the event. The frame-by-frame animation helped me express my fear and uncertainty during the moments in between. For the final frames, I used risoprint to depict the fire and the chaos among the people, giving it a raw, intense energy.
This project was also a chance for me to try out new techniques. Gelliprint was something I hadn’t done before, and combining it with animation was a fun challenge. I also hadn’t made an animation using risoprint, so that part of the project let me explore new ideas and push my creativity.
